Lifetime performance

The profitability of a farm is determined to a large extent by the amount of milk that the animals produce in their lifetime (lifetime production). The milk yield per day of life is referred to as life effectiveness (LE). On average, it should be at least 15 kg of milk per day of life. The LE is determined jointly by the lifetime output, the length of the rearing phase and the useful life.
By evaluating lifetime performance, the reasons for the often too low life effectiveness can be quantified:
- When, how many cows leave too early, and for what reasons.
- Influence of first calving age on performance and effectiveness.
- Development of lifetime performance and life since 1 calving
- Relationship between lifetime achievement and fertility
The evaluation of the lifetime performance is carried out in 2 variants for the departed animals and for the current living animal population.
For all departed animals, an analysis of the frequency of departures is carried out for the selected period according to the reasons for departure, first calving age, lactations, as well as according to age of departure, duration of use, etc.
To evaluate the effectiveness of production, in addition to lifetime performance, life effectiveness and effectiveness of use are provided.
Key figures of lifetime performance (LP)
- Lifetime performance (LP) = cumulative Mkg, Fkg, Pkg total on leaving
- Life effectiveness (LE) = lifetime performance / life days
- Effectiveness of use (UE) = lifetime performance / days since 1st calving
- Period of use (PU) = days of use (DU) or also feed days, husbandry days
= number of days from first calving to departure (incl. dry off time)
- Output per milking day = lifetime performance / number of milking days in a lifetime
- Milking days (MD) = duration of use – dry off time
- Life days (LD) = number of days from birth to departure (incl. duration of rearing)
= Useful life + first calving age
Lifetime performance
- Lifetime production is the cumulative milk, fat or protein output from the first calving to departure.
Effectiveness of life
- Life effectiveness characterizes the milk, fat and protein output per day of life.
- It is therefore directly determined by the lifetime achievement and the days of life.
Life effectiveness (LE) = lifetime achievement / life days
The days of life are the sum of the useful life and the age of first calving:
Life days (LD) = useful life + first calving age
Thus, the LE includes the performance in the productive phase plus the rearing period. ( The rearing period corresponds to the first calving age.)
A LE of about 15 kg of milk/LD is required to break even. However, this can vary greatly depending on the level of operational costs.
Service life
- The useful life is the time from the first calving to the end (incl. dry off time). It results from the days of use (DU) for this period.
- With the extension of the useful life, the animals give milk longer and the lifetime yield (LP) increases.
- The difference between LD and DU is determined by the length of the first calving age (FCA).
